India Reassesses Black Shark Torpedo Purchase from WASS Amid Defence Contracts Expansion
India's Ministry of Defence is reconsidering a canceled deal for 98 Black Shark torpedoes due to operational concerns for the Navy. Concurrently, Rappid Valves has secured INR 29.86 crores in naval orders, enhancing its role in India's maritime defence.

The Indian Ministry of Defence is exploring the revival of a deal for 98 Black Shark torpedoes from Whitehead Sistemi Subacquei S.p.A. (WASS), which was canceled in June 2022. The contract involves the delivery of 20 fully formed torpedoes, with 78 to be manufactured under license at Bharat Dynamics Limited.
Rappid Valves has obtained INR 29.86 crores in orders linked to various Indian Navy programmes, including an INR 18.06 crores contract with BHEL. These developments highlight the importance of domestic suppliers in India's push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing, although the potential delays in modifying submarine systems for alternative torpedoes pose operational risks.
