India Sets Green Ammonia and Green Methanol Standards to Boost Green Hydrogen Trade
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) of India has announced standards for green ammonia and green methanol, defining emission thresholds for their classification as 'green'. The standards require a maximum of 0.38 kg CO₂ equivalent per kg of ammonia and 0.44 kg CO₂ equivalent per kg of methanol. The guidelines aim to promote the production and trade of green hydrogen derivatives, supporting decarbonization efforts across various sectors. MNRE will provide detailed methodologies for measurement and certification.

The Government of India, through the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), has established standards for green ammonia and green methanol, effective from February 27, 2026. Green ammonia must not exceed 0.38 kg CO₂ equivalent per kg, while green methanol is limited to 0.44 kg CO₂ equivalent per kg.
These emissions encompass the entire production process, including hydrogen production and on-site storage. Carbon dioxide for green methanol can be sourced from biogenic sources, direct air capture, or industrial sources.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission, with an initial budget of Rs 19,744 crore, aims to position India as a global hub for green hydrogen production. MNRE will issue methodologies for monitoring and certification.
