India Targets Leadership in Bio-Energy and SAF Exports at Bio-Energy Conference 2026
India aims to become a major player in the bio-energy sector, targeting 5-7% of global Sustainable Aviation Fuel exports worth $15-20 billion annually. A unified governance structure and resource missions are necessary to overcome current fragmentation.

India seeks to establish itself as a leader in the global bio-energy market, particularly in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with potential production of 5-7% of the global supply, valued at $15-20 billion annually. The government has set blending targets of 1% by 2027, 2% by 2028, and 5% by 2030, with the first SAF plant set to begin operations at Indian Oil's facility in Panipat.
Industry leaders emphasize the need for a single nodal agency to address fragmented governance across various ministries and to implement resource missions that optimize agricultural residues. The Global South is observing India's model for potential replication in agrarian economies. As clean fuels gain prominence due to global energy crises, the urgency for strategic collaboration and infrastructure development in the sector is critical for India's energy security.
