India to Enhance Steel Production and Raw Material Security Ahead of 2030 Capacity Goal

GREEN STEEL

The Indian government is prioritizing increased steel production and raw material security as it approaches its 2030 target of 300 million tonnes (MT) of installed steelmaking capacity. Emphasis will be placed on low-carbon technologies, green steel capacity, and high-end steel production to cater to domestic and export markets.

India is currently the second-largest crude steel producer globally, with demand driven by infrastructure spending and government initiatives. However, challenges such as rising imports and volatile raw material prices persist.

The National Steel Policy aims for an additional 200 MT capacity and 250 MT production by 2030. India's installed capacity was 235 MT as of November 2025, necessitating a further 65 MT increase by 2030.

The government has implemented safeguard and anti-dumping duties to protect domestic producers, and a Production Linked Incentive scheme encourages value-added steel manufacturing. Industry leaders stress the need for accelerated momentum to meet NSP targets.
