India's LPG Consumption Declines 13% Amid Supply Challenges, Focus Shifts to Biogas and Renewable Energy
India's LPG consumption dropped 13% in March 2026, falling to 2.38 million tonnes due to supply disruptions. The country is exploring biogas and other renewable fuels to bolster energy security and reduce import reliance.

In March 2026, India's LPG consumption decreased by 13%, down to 2.38 million tonnes from 2.73 million tonnes a year earlier. The crisis has prompted India to seek alternative fuels such as biogas, with the army planning to adopt biogas stoves, potentially saving 31,000 kg of cooking gas daily.
Additionally, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) highlighted dimethyl ether (DME) as a viable substitute for LPG, with blending standards now permitting up to 20% DME in LPG. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that production of biofuels could double by 2030 with enhanced policies, offering prospects for energy security and rural development. Ongoing supply disruptions, particularly from the Arabian Gulf, necessitate these shifts.
