India's MNRE and BIRAC Launch Green Hydrogen Pilot Funding Initiative
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council have launched a pilot funding initiative for green hydrogen production in India, offering INR 100 crore for innovative projects utilizing biomass and wastewater. Each project can receive up to INR 25 crore, with applications due by January 27, 2026, and operational requirements set within 12 months. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between laboratory research and real-world deployment, supporting national bioenergy goals while promoting rural employment and reducing pollution.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council have announced a Call for Proposals for pilot-scale green hydrogen production in India, with total funding of INR 100 crore available for innovative projects. Each project can receive up to INR 25 crore, focusing on biomass and wastewater processes, with applications due by January 27, 2026.
The initiative aims to utilize India's biomass reserves and bridge the gap between lab experiments and real deployment. Projects must be operational within 12 months, followed by a six-month demonstration phase.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission's Advisory Group will oversee the project approvals. By mid-2026, efficiency and environmental impact data will be assessed, with potential future funding for successful pilots. The program aligns with existing national bioenergy goals and seeks to foster rural employment and reduce pollution.
