Indonesia's Geothermal Potential: A Catalyst for Global Energy Transition

GEOTHERMAL

Indonesia stands at the forefront of the global energy transition, largely due to its unparalleled geothermal potential, the largest in the world. The government has committed to harnessing this resource, positioning geothermal energy as the backbone of national energy sovereignty and a vital contributor to achieving global net-zero emission targets. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, called for international collaboration to maximize geothermal utilization, emphasizing Indonesia's openness to share technology and best practices with friendly nations.

At the Indonesia International Geothermal Convention & Exhibition (IIGCE) 2025, Lahadalia highlighted the government's strategic support for the expansive development of geothermal energy, particularly the necessity for robust infrastructure to facilitate this growth. Given that geothermal sites are often located in remote areas lacking adequate electrical support, the government is dedicated to developing a transmission network of 48,000 kilometers between 2025 and 2034 to accelerate renewable energy initiatives.

The theme of this year's convention, "Fostering Collaboration for a Green Economy in Indonesia: The Role of Geothermal Energy in Sustainable Growth," reflects the concerted efforts by the Indonesian Geothermal Association (API) and its partners to drive this agenda forward. Julfi Hadi, the association's chairman, underscored that geothermal energy is unique due to its ability to provide stable power around the clock, with a capacity factor exceeding 90%. This reliability positions geothermal energy as an ideal foundation for a resilient and sustainable clean energy system.

IIGCE 2025 gathered over 15 international speakers, including CEOs of global companies, energy ministers from various nations, and prominent researchers. The event not only showcased 150 international exhibitors but also presented investment forums with potential transactions reaching up to USD 2 billion, alongside the launch of five strategic national geothermal projects.

Eniya Listiani Dewi, Director General of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, announced a comprehensive policy package aimed at accelerating geothermal development. Indonesia aspires to become a global reference point for sustainable geothermal development, further solidifying its role in the energy landscape.
