Ireland's Dublin Data Center Becomes First in Europe to Use Microgrid Technology
A data center near Dublin has become Europe's first to utilize an independent microgrid, operated by AVK and Pure Data Centre Group. This facility aims to address power connection delays while supporting the AI industry's growth. With a capacity of 110 megawatts and an investment of approximately 1 billion euros, it can provide dispatchable power and has trialed various energy sources. Ireland's regulatory changes now require new data centers to source most of their power from renewables, highlighting the shift towards localized energy solutions.

The Dublin data center, operated by AVK and Pure Data Centre Group, is the first in Europe to implement an independent microgrid, addressing ongoing power connection delays. With a total capacity of about 110 megawatts and an investment of around 1 billion euros, the facility utilizes natural gas engines and has tested Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil and biomethane as power sources.
The project responds to Ireland's regulatory demands for new data centers to generate at least 80% of their power from renewables. As the AI sector expands, this microgrid aims to provide immediate and sustainable energy solutions, with future potential for grid connectivity and dispatchable power.
