ISMA Refutes Water Usage Claims in Ethanol Production
ISMA disputes the claim that 10,000 litres of water are needed for one litre of ethanol, emphasizing the Ethanol Blending Programme's positive impact on the sugar sector. The programme has generated over ₹1.7 lakh crore in payments to farmers and reduced CO₂ emissions by approximately 870 lakh tonnes.

The Indian Sugar & BioEnergy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) has countered claims regarding excessive water usage in ethanol production, specifically the assertion that 10,000 litres of water are needed for one litre of ethanol. ISMA's report highlights that sugarcane requires only 2,469 litres of water for ethanol production, compared to maize's 4,569 litres.
The Ethanol Blending Programme, initiated in 2018, has provided a crucial outlet for surplus sugar, enhancing market stability and benefitting farmers through over ₹1.7 lakh crore in payments. The programme also contributed to a reduction of around 870 lakh tonnes of CO₂ emissions, indicating its effectiveness in addressing both economic and environmental challenges.
