Japan Airlines Launches First Commercial Flight Using Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Japan Airlines (JAL) completed its inaugural commercial flight powered by Japanese-made Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on February 4. The airline's initiative, which utilizes used cotton clothing as a feedstock for SAF production, underscores its commitment to reducing aviation emissions and advancing sustainable travel practices.

Japan Airlines (JAL) operated its first commercial flight using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on February 4, flying from Tokyo Haneda to Fukuoka. This fuel is derived from recycled cotton clothing, marking a unique approach to sustainable aviation.
JAL's SAF initiative began in 2018, and they have since collected over 250,000 garments with support from local partners. The airline aims for 100% SAF production domestically and is exploring further projects in the United States. Currently, aviation regulations limit fuel mixtures to 50% SAF, but advancements like JAL's efforts could enhance sustainable aviation's future.
