Japan and EU Advance Digital Partnership Across Key Technology Sectors
Japan and the EU are enhancing cooperation in data governance, AI, quantum technology, and digital infrastructure. This partnership aims to improve data sharing, bolster economic security, and drive innovation within the digital economy.

The EU and Japan are formalizing collaboration in critical sectors including digital identity, AI, quantum technology, and semiconductors. A Data Strategy Working Group will be launched to enhance data governance and interoperability, while a joint project on quantum technology known as Q-Neko has secured $4 million in EU funding to develop quantum hardware and applications.
The 2nd EU-Japan Digital Week in March 2026 marked progress in their digital partnership, which began in 2022. This partnership aims to address supply chain challenges and align R&D policies in response to competitive pressures.
The EU and Japan are working to promote interoperable standards and ensure that technology developments benefit society. Their joint initiatives could reshape the landscape for digital innovation and economic resilience in the Indo-Pacific region.
