Japan Unveils Taigei-Class Lithium-Ion Stealth Submarine
The Taigei-class submarine, Japan's latest attack submarine, is the first designed entirely around lithium-ion batteries, enhancing speed and stealth. This shift from traditional AIP technology marks a strategic change in Japan's naval capabilities in response to regional threats.

Japan's Taigei-class submarine utilizes lithium-ion batteries exclusively, yielding a significant performance upgrade over previous Soryu-class submarines. The design prioritizes high-speed underwater endurance, achieving speeds of 20 knots while submerged.
It features advanced machinery isolation and acoustic-absorbent hull coatings to minimize detectability. Armed with Type 18 torpedoes and Harpoon Block II missiles, its role focuses on anti-ship operations and sea denial within the First Island Chain.
This submarine is strategically positioned to enhance regional defense against China's naval expansion, representing a cost-effective alternative to nuclear submarines at $700 million per unit. The Taigei-class reflects an evolution in non-nuclear submarine technology, emphasizing operational performance and survivability in contested environments.
