Japan's footprint in Kenya is becoming increasingly prominent, particularly in Mombasa, where the port has evolved into a modern maritime hub, facilitating the movement of over 1.4 million shipping containers annually. This hub plays a crucial role not only for Kenya but also for neighboring nations such as Uganda, Rwanda, and South Sudan. The impact of Japanese investment extends beyond logistics; it is vividly exemplified by the Olkaria geothermal power stations, which have positioned Kenya as a leader in renewable energy on the continent, generating over half of the nation's electricity from clean, reliable sources.

Infrastructure improvements, such as the Dongo Kundu bypass and the Nairobi eastern bypass, have significantly reduced travel times and alleviated congestion, enhancing the daily lives of millions of commuters. These endeavors are not mere acts of charity; they are intricately aligned with Kenya's Vision 2030 development blueprint, which prioritizes economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.

What sets Japan’s approach apart is its commitment to transferring technology and expertise alongside infrastructure projects. This ensures that Kenyans are equipped to maintain, adapt, and expand these developments long after their completion.

During my time at Expo 2025 in Osaka, I engaged in numerous conversations with Japanese officials, business leaders, and visitors who were familiar with these initiatives. Many had personal connections to the projects, having either contributed to a road in Nairobi or provided technology to a Kenyan hospital. These discussions organically shifted toward the future, exploring how to apply the successful principles that fostered growth in ports and power plants to emerging challenges like climate change adaptation, green manufacturing, and digital transformation.

The key to this future, as always, lies in partnership. We have established ourselves as trusted allies, aware of the impact and longevity of previous projects. In an era of intensifying global challenges, we recognize the opportunities that exist in renewable energy and smart city infrastructure.
