Jersey City Council Reviews $482k Public Defender Contracts for 2026
The Jersey City Council is reviewing contracts totaling nearly $500,000 for public defender services for 2026, including $14,000 for the Chief Public Defender and $468,500 for his deputies. This review highlights the increasing demand for legal representation and the challenges faced in recruiting public defenders amid higher case loads.

The Jersey City Council has examined contracts worth $482,500 for the public defender's office for the calendar year 2026. Chief Municipal Public Defender Andrew Abrams confirmed the contracts include $14,000 for himself and $468,500 for his nine deputies.
Abrams stated that the public defender practice has become more demanding, with case loads increasing fivefold since before COVID-19. Jersey City operates with one of the largest municipal courts in New Jersey, competing with Newark and Camden, which have larger budgets for public defense.
Newark's budget stands at approximately $1 million compared to Jersey City's budget, which is less than half that amount. The council will meet again for a regular session tomorrow at City Hall.
