JICA Transfers Upgraded Power Substation to Malawi Government
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has officially handed over the Lilongwe Old Town Substation to the Malawi Government. This infrastructure aims to enhance reliable electricity supply, connecting over 20,000 new customers and supporting the goal of 1,000 megawatts by 2025.

On March 7, JICA transferred the Lilongwe Old Town Substation to Malawi, including the expansion of the Kanengo Substation. This upgrade is expected to improve power supply stability and reliability, crucial for Malawi's development and the Malawi 2063 initiative.
The facility will serve over 20,000 new customers, addressing intermittent power issues and reducing blackouts. The Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, emphasized the importance of achieving 1,000 megawatts by 2025 as part of the country's energy goals. The project represents a significant investment in Malawi's energy infrastructure, with potential long-term benefits for economic growth and quality of life.
