KCEC Advances Questa Hydrogen Project Amid Growing Community Opposition
Kit Carson Electric Co-op plans to begin construction on its Questa hydrogen project soon, contingent on site control from Chevron. Community opposition is rising, with local residents expressing concerns over environmental impacts and job creation amidst significant federal funding and regulatory changes.

Kit Carson Electric Co-op's Questa hydrogen project is set to commence construction of a solar array, pending site control from Chevron. The project requires 10 percent completion by July 4 to secure federal tax credits, utilizing $12 million in ordered equipment.
The hydrogen facility will rely on 47 acre-feet of groundwater annually, raising concerns among local residents about environmental impacts. The project received $231 million in federal funding, triggering a NEPA review process that has been streamlined under recent policy changes.
Community members have expressed skepticism about job estimates, with recent projections indicating only 200-250 construction jobs and limited long-term positions. A petition with 726 signatures has been presented to slow the project for further community input.
