KenGen to Raise Masinga Dam Spillway for Increased Storage and Improved Hydro Stability

GEOTHERMAL

KenGen plans to raise the Masinga Dam spillway by 1.5 meters, increasing reservoir storage by 170hm3. This upgrade aims to enhance water release consistency downstream and improve the utilization of the Kamburu, Gitaru, and Kindaruma plants.

The expansion will reduce generation volatility during dry periods, improving the effective capacity factor without adding new megawatts. KenGen's installed capacity stands at 1,786 MW, producing 8,482 GWh of electricity, reflecting a 1% increase from 2024.

The company reported a net profit of KSh 10.5 billion for the financial year ending June 2025, a 54% rise from the previous year. KenGen is also advancing a project pipeline of 252 MW, including renewable energy initiatives in Kenya and a geothermal project in Tanzania, supporting the country's transition to renewable power.
