In a significant move to bolster geothermal energy development in East Africa, Kenya and France have entered into a cooperation agreement that seeks to harness the region's untapped geothermal resources. This partnership, highlighted during a signing ceremony in Nairobi attended by key officials, merges Kenya's advanced capabilities in deep geothermal power generation with France's expertise in direct geothermal heat applications. The initiative aims to not only unlock the vast geothermal potential in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda but also to create a model of effective cooperation that benefits all parties involved.

French Ambassador to Kenya, Arnaud Suquet, expressed France's commitment to leveraging Kenya's world-class geothermal expertise as part of a broader strategy to support the country's ambitious vision for a 100% renewable energy mix and universal energy access by 2030. Kenya stands out globally, ranking seventh in geothermal power generation and accounting for over 40% of Africa's installed geothermal capacity. This partnership will enable Kenya to share its knowledge with neighboring countries, facilitating a regional transition to clean energy and promoting sustainable economic growth.

Kenya's Principal Secretary for Energy, Alex Wachira, emphasized that this agreement will enhance regional cooperation, accelerating geothermal energy utilization and fostering resilience in the economy. The Kenyan geothermal sector is already exploring innovative applications beyond electricity generation, such as milk pasteurization and heating for agricultural operations, which broaden the commercial viability of geothermal resources and introduce new revenue streams.

Moreover, the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) is actively expanding its operations, recently launching geothermal drilling initiatives in Tanzania and securing exploration rights in Zambia. These efforts underscore KenGen's commitment to supporting regional partners in clean energy transitions and reflect Kenya's leading role in advancing renewable energy throughout East and Southern Africa.

The agreement not only aims to establish a framework for strengthening East Africa's position as a leader in renewable energy but also highlights the collaborative spirit of South-South and North partnerships. As both nations work together, they are poised to enhance climate resilience and drive green growth, contributing significantly to sustainable development in the region.
