Kenyans Face Severe Malnutrition Amid Drought and Funding Cuts
Turkana County in Kenya is experiencing a worsening malnutrition crisis due to severe drought conditions and international funding cuts. The local community heavily relies on livestock, but herds are declining, exacerbating food insecurity and health issues.

Turkana County, Kenya, has over 75% poverty, exacerbated by a severe drought in 2022, the worst in 60 years. A cash transfer project initiated in November 2025 provides 5,021 KSH monthly to 144 households, aiming to combat malnutrition, which has dropped from 36% to 26% in Loroo village.
However, funding cuts threaten this initiative and related healthcare services, limiting support to severely malnourished children only. Additionally, livestock vaccinations have been implemented, with 108,000 goats treated recently in Naoros village.
The community has also instigated a solar water pump project, enhancing water access and agricultural sustainability. Despite these efforts, uncertainty looms due to international aid cuts, particularly from the U.S., impacting ongoing support for health and nutrition programs.
