Kenya's Annual Losses from Illicit Alcohol Brews Reach Sh71 Billion
Kenya incurs an estimated Sh71 billion loss annually due to illicit alcohol brews, as reported by the Anti-Counterfeit Agency. Over 21% of the alcohol market in 2022 was found to be counterfeit, affecting public health and safety.

The Anti-Counterfeit Agency (ACA) reports that Kenya loses Sh71 billion annually to illicit alcohol, with 21% of the alcohol market in 2022 identified as counterfeit. The illegal-alcohol economy includes categories such as counterfeit brands, contraband, tax-leaked products, and repackaged illicit brews, with artisanal brews comprising 66% of total volume.
Established smuggling routes between Kenya and neighboring countries facilitate this trade. The ACA proposes enhanced collaboration with the Kenya Revenue Authority and the establishment of a specialized prosecution unit to address these issues. The high prevalence of counterfeit alcohol poses serious health risks, including mass casualties from methanol contamination, necessitating urgent action.
