Kumamoto City Proposes Record ¥437.8 Billion Budget for 2026 with Semiconductor Focus
Kumamoto City's fiscal 2026 budget proposal totals ¥437.8 billion, a 4.4% increase from 2025. Spending on semiconductor initiatives will reach ¥1.26 billion, largely due to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s planned factory. The budget includes support for local suppliers and services for foreign residents. Additionally, funding for the Kumamoto streetcar system will nearly double, and municipal tax revenue is projected to rise by 4.9%. Increased bond issuance will finance the budget.

Kumamoto City has proposed a fiscal 2026 budget of ¥437.8 billion, marking a 4.4% increase from the previous year. A significant portion, ¥1.26 billion, is allocated for semiconductor initiatives in relation to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s new factory.
The budget will enhance support for local suppliers and services for foreign residents, including Japanese-language classes. Funding for the Kumamoto streetcar system will nearly double, while municipal tax revenue is expected to grow by 4.9%. To support this budget, increased bond issuance is planned.
