Kyuden Mirai Energy Decommissions Hacchobaru Binary Power Plant in Japan
Kyuden Mirai Energy has officially decommissioned the Hacchobaru Binary Power Plant in Kokonoe, Oita Prefecture, effective December 31, 2025. The facility, Japan's first commercial binary geothermal plant, had been idle since January 2020 and operated from 2004 to 2006 with a 2,000-kilowatt output. Meanwhile, the Hacchobaru Geothermal Power Plant, which has a total output of 110,000 kilowatts, will remain operational.

Kyuden Mirai Energy has decommissioned the Hacchobaru Binary Power Plant in Kokonoe, Oita Prefecture, officially shutting it down on December 31, 2025. The plant was idle since January 2020 and was the first commercial binary geothermal facility in Japan, opening in 2004 and operating fully since 2006 with a 2,000-kilowatt output. The Hacchobaru Geothermal Power Plant, with a total output of 110,000 kilowatts, will continue to operate.
