Lakes Region Faces Housing Development Challenges Due to Gas Moratorium
Local officials in the Lakes Region express concerns that a moratorium on natural gas connections is hindering the development of affordable housing, with estimates indicating a need for 60,000 to 90,000 new homes. Liberty Utilities has denied gas service to multiple projects, creating obstacles for developers and residents.

A moratorium on new natural gas connections in the Lakes Region has been imposed, affecting seven communities including Franklin and Laconia. Liberty Utilities has denied service to at least 18 projects, citing anticipated capacity issues as early as 2024.
This situation is exacerbating the need for affordable housing, with a projected requirement of 60,000 to 90,000 new homes. Local officials were unaware of the moratorium until residents reported service denials.
While developers can consider alternatives such as propane or electric systems, the transition incurs additional costs and delays. Liberty's plans to enhance pipeline capacity with a $20 million upgrade remain unfulfilled. Calls for improved transparency and expedited development are growing among community leaders, as housing projects are jeopardized.
