Launch of Subsidy Program for Sustainable Inland Shipping Operators
Starting post-summer 2026, inland shipping operators can access €230 million in subsidies aimed at sustainable transitions. The initial funding of €39 million will support the retrofitting of up to 160 vessels by 2032.

Inland shipping operators can apply for subsidies from the Ministry of Infrastructure to implement sustainable practices. Funding of approximately €230 million will be available from 2026 to 2030, with €39 million allocated for the first round.
Eligible technologies include electric propulsion, hydrogen fuel cells, and combustion engines powered by hydrogen or methanol. Subsidy amounts for projects will range from €500,000 to €3 million based on the chosen method. This initiative aims to retrofit 150 to 160 ships by 2032, contributing to reduced reliance on foreign fossil fuels amidst the energy crisis.
