Liebherr Tower Cranes Drive Iceland's Construction Growth
Iceland's construction sector has seen significant expansion, particularly in energy, healthcare, and aquaculture, driven by Liebherr's tower cranes. The company holds nearly 50% of the market through Rüko, operating a fleet of 45 cranes, essential for various ongoing projects.

Liebherr's tower cranes are pivotal in Iceland's construction sector, with nearly half of the market share held via local dealer Rüko. Current projects include a salmon farming facility in Þorlákshöfn, which involves seven Liebherr cranes and aims for an annual production capacity of 10,000 tonnes.
In Reykjavik, the New National Hospital has 15 cranes operational, while the Svartsengi geothermal plant expansion, which commenced in 2023, faced geological challenges but was completed by late 2025. The Midbær Selfoss development is also underway, utilizing four fast erecting cranes. A market trend since 2017 indicates a preference for crane rentals over purchases among contractors.
