Locus Energy Expands Hydropower Portfolio with Acquisition of Three Norwegian Plants
In the spring of 2025, Locus Energy, a company under the SEB Nordic Energy umbrella, made a significant move by acquiring three standalone small-scale hydropower plants located in the municipalities of Fjord, Råsta, and Vestnes. This acquisition is set to contribute approximately 15 GWh of annual renewable energy to the company’s existing portfolio in Norway, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy production.
The newly acquired assets, all operational and dating from 2001 to 2012, are strategically situated in the Norwegian price area No3, close to Locus Energy’s current facilities. This proximity allows for a coordinated operational approach, enabling shared resources and optimized maintenance planning—a hallmark of the company's cluster strategy.
As Niklas Sörensen, CEO and founder of Locus Energy, noted, this acquisition strengthens the company's operational presence in a region deemed pivotal for future growth. By co-locating assets, Locus Energy can streamline its operations, enhancing both efficiency and local responsiveness.
The Norwegian price area No3 is on track for increased electricity prices, driven by improved grid infrastructure and heightened demand, making it an attractive region for long-term investments in renewable electricity generation. The enhancement of Locus Energy's hydropower portfolio in this area not only fortifies its financial resilience but also aligns with a broader pan-Nordic strategy.
Elin Löfblad, portfolio manager at SEB Nordic Energy, emphasized that hydropower serves as the backbone of their portfolio, complemented by battery storage and the repowering of wind energy across Nordic markets. By integrating reliable production with intermittent assets and storage solutions, Locus Energy is laying the groundwork for a robust and scalable independent power producer (IPP) model.
