Louth County Council Urged to Explore Hydrogen and HVO for Vehicle Fleet
Louth County Council is being urged to consider Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and hydrogen fuel cells for its vehicle fleet. Currently, 21% of the fleet is electric, with 27 electric vans. Councillors John Reilly and Shane McGuinness highlighted the potential to eliminate fossil fuels and reduce carbon footprint, with McGuinness noting significant EU investment in hydrogen. The council's funding for fleet replacement comes from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

Louth County Council has been urged to explore Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and hydrogen fuel cells to power its vehicle fleet, which currently includes 27 electric vans, representing 21% electrification. Councillor John Reilly emphasized the council's progress and potential to eliminate fossil fuels, while Councillor Shane McGuinness argued for hydrogen's zero emissions and highlighted the EU's €430 billion investment in hydrogen technology over the next five years.
Councillor Robert Nash also raised the possibility of acquiring an electric fire engine. Funding for fleet replacements is sourced from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
