LUR Achieves 75% Reduction in Steelmaking Emissions in Rail Wheel Production
Lucchini Unipart Rail (LUR) reports a 75% reduction in steelmaking emissions through sustainable practices. Implementing Electric Arc Furnace technology and sourcing 72% recycled materials are central to this achievement.

Lucchini Unipart Rail (LUR) has achieved a 75% reduction in steelmaking emissions. The company sources 72% of its materials from recycled components, including 7% directly from wheels, using Electric Arc Furnace technology, which lowers CO2 emissions by over 80% compared to traditional methods.
LUR has also introduced SUPERLOS®, an advanced steel grade that enhances durability and further reduces emissions. Collaborations with partners aim to optimize component maintenance, thus extending wheelset lifespan and minimizing emissions associated with maintenance.
Future plans include expanding emissions monitoring and implementing sustainability recommendations to align with their Carbon Reduction Plan. The company invested £7.5 million to expand production capacity in the UK.
