Maersk to Explore Ethanol as Alternative Fuel for Decarbonisation

HYDROGENMETHANOL

Maersk is exploring the use of ethanol as an alternative fuel to aid the shipping industry's decarbonisation and reduce reliance on China. CEO Vincent Clerc noted that while green methanol production is concentrated in China, ethanol production is more globally distributed, with the US and Brazil as key producers.

This diversification could foster broader international support for maritime decarbonisation. The shipping sector faces challenges in decarbonisation, requiring significant investments for retrofitting and new vessel construction. Other companies, such as Hapag-Lloyd and North Sea Container Line, are also pursuing low-emission fuels, including hydrogen-powered ships by 2027.
