Malawi and Switzerland Launch Dairy Biogas Initiative to Enhance Rural Livelihoods
Malawi has initiated the Dairy Biogas Program in collaboration with Switzerland to support smallholder dairy farmers. The project, part of a bilateral climate agreement, aims to distribute 10,000 biodigesters for converting cow manure into clean biogas and organic fertilizer. It intends to improve rural livelihoods, enhance climate resilience, and contribute to sustainable development goals. The program is backed by organizations like Sistema.bio and KliK Foundation, which will purchase carbon credits for financial viability.

The Malawi Dairy Biogas Program, launched in partnership with Switzerland, aims to transform rural livelihoods by distributing 10,000 biodigesters to smallholder dairy farmers. This initiative, authorized under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, will allow farmers to convert cow manure into clean biogas for cooking and organic fertilizer for agriculture.
The program aligns with Malawi's national development priorities and climate goals, reducing methane emissions and reliance on firewood. Financial backing comes from the KliK Foundation, which will purchase carbon credits to support the project. This collaboration advances climate action while improving living standards and food security for rural communities.
