Maryland Investigates 32,000 Gallon Jet Fuel Leak at Joint Base Andrews
The Maryland Department of the Environment is investigating a significant jet fuel leak at Joint Base Andrews, estimated at around 32,000 gallons. The incident has raised concerns regarding environmental safety and compliance with state regulations.

The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) is investigating approximately 32,000 gallons of jet fuel leaks at Joint Base Andrews, which occurred between January and March. MDE has mandated the Air Force to halt the operation of the affected fueling system, conduct soil investigations, and install monitoring wells.
Approximately 10,000 gallons of fuel were captured before reaching Piscataway Creek, where visible fuel sheen and odors were reported on March 23. MDE noted that the Air Force failed to promptly report the extent of the leak, only disclosing the full details on April 8, 2026. Advisories are in place against swimming and fishing in the creek due to potential health risks.
