Mexico's President Proposes Unconventional Gas Extraction to Reduce US Dependency
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced plans to exploit unconventional natural gas deposits to decrease foreign energy reliance amid global market disruptions. A technical committee will analyze environmentally sustainable extraction methods over the next two months.

Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, revealed a strategy to enhance domestic natural gas production by tapping into 141 billion cubic feet of unconventional reserves. This initiative seeks to address the country's significant reliance on U.S. imports, which currently supply about 75% of its demand.
A two-month assessment will investigate less harmful extraction techniques, although the feasibility of 'sustainable fracking' remains debated. Sheinbaum aims for production to rise to 5.8 billion cubic feet per day by 2035 from 2.3 billion.
The success of this approach hinges on regulatory flexibility towards private investment, which has been limited under previous administrations. Environmental risks and political opposition could complicate implementation.
