Meyer Turku Develops Net Zero Cruise Ship Concept with 90% Carbon Footprint Reduction

METHANOL

Meyer Turku has developed a net zero cruise ship concept under its AVATAR project, achieving over 90% reduction in lifecycle carbon footprint compared to International Maritime Organization benchmarks. This project is part of the NEcOLEAP initiative, co-funded by Business Finland.

The concept focuses on technologies projected to be available by 2030, excluding experimental technologies. It features a lightweight structure, energy-efficient air-handling units that cut heating and cooling demand by 50%, and utilizes bio-methanol fuel, wind-assisted propulsion, and solar panels.

Sustainable materials and optimized space use further reduce emissions. A digital twin model evaluated design impacts across the energy system.
