Milnerton Lagoon Restoration Progresses with Infrastructure Upgrades
Cape Town's Milnerton Lagoon restoration shows early improvements due to infrastructure upgrades, reducing pollution and enhancing water quality. Significant reductions in sewer blockages and hydrogen sulphide odour incidents indicate effective intervention measures.

The City of Cape Town reports that infrastructure upgrades at Milnerton Lagoon are yielding positive environmental impacts. Key interventions have led to a decrease in sewer blockages from 4,270 in October 2024 to 3,489 by February 2026 and a drop in hydrogen sulphide odour incidents from 1,397 to just 10 within a year.
Major investments include upgrades to sewer networks and treatment facilities, with a membrane bioreactor system set for commissioning in November. Ongoing improvements at pump stations, including Koeberg Road, and a new dredging project anticipated to start in June are part of the recovery plan. Long-term sustainability will rely on continuous investment and monitoring to maintain water quality.
