Minnesota Develops Large-Scale Aquifer Thermal Energy System for Heating and Cooling
The Heights, a mixed-use development in St. Paul, Minnesota, will utilize a large-scale aquifer thermal energy system to provide heating and cooling by drawing groundwater from an aquifer located 100 to 150 meters underground.
This project, part of a long-term clean energy initiative by the US Department of Energy, aims to store excess summer heat for winter use. The system will serve 850 homes and several light-industrial buildings, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 74% compared to conventional methods.
The projected construction cost is approximately $12 million, with federal tax credits expected to cover about 50% of this cost. Darcy Solutions is overseeing well drilling for an additional geothermal system for Xcel Energy's new service center on the site. The project signifies a resurgence of geothermal energy technologies in the US.
