Mumbai's Deonar Landfill Clean-Up Advances with CRZ Approval
The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority has approved the Deonar landfill clean-up plan, a ₹2,000-crore initiative. This approval is crucial for the project to progress, pending only High Court and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board consents.

The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) granted approval for the ₹2,000-crore clean-up of the Deonar landfill on March 25, 2026. The project, which spans nearly 120 hectares and has been operational since 1927, aims to address environmental hazards such as methane emissions and leachate seepage.
The clean-up will only allow legacy waste removal within Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) areas, with strict environmental safeguards in place. Further permissions from the Bombay High Court and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board are required before the project can commence, ideally before the monsoon season, as wet conditions complicate waste handling. Effective monitoring of environmental impact and compliance with management plans will be necessary to mitigate ecological risks.
