Myanmar's SAC Implements National Military Service Amid Security Concerns
The State Administration Council (SAC) in Myanmar has enacted a new Military Service Law effective February 10, 2024, mandating national military service for all citizens. This decision, according to Major General Zaw Min Tun, is aimed at enhancing national defense and security amid ongoing challenges.

The Military Service Law, which replaces legislation from 1959, intends to unify military missions and strengthen ties between the army and civilians. Major General Zaw Min Tun emphasized that this initiative reflects a need for war mobilization and is a standard practice internationally.
The law is rooted in historical discussions on militia strategies dating back to 1964 and was adopted in 1967, particularly during the Chinese White Kuomintang invasion and domestic insurgency. It incorporates military education and responsibilities for citizens to uphold national integrity and sovereignty, promoting service with pride.
