Namibia Advances Sustainable Rail and Infrastructure Investments
Namibia is undertaking significant investments in logistics and infrastructure, focusing on sustainable rail and airport enhancements. The pilot of a hydrogen-diesel locomotive by TransNamib and budget allocations signal a shift towards greener transport solutions, impacting regional connectivity and logistics efficiency.

In April 2026, TransNamib received approval for a six-month trial of a hydrogen-diesel locomotive, aiming to assess hydrogen technology's operational viability. This initiative is part of a broader investment strategy that includes R6.6 billion allocated for railway development and increasing allocations for rail operations, reaching R1.3 billion in 2027/28.
Additionally, the government is budgeted R2.1 billion for road infrastructure in 2026/27, with R2.4 billion sourced from fuel levies. The Road Fund Administration is exploring new revenue streams and plans to enforce regulations to reduce grey imports.
Investments in airport infrastructure, including upgrades and new terminals, support the logistics sector and aim to improve regional connectivity. These developments may enhance Namibia's position in sustainable transport but require ongoing maintenance and financial oversight.
