National Grid Electricity Transmission's Hackney Waltham Cross Upgrade Project to Enhance Network Capacity
The Hackney Waltham Cross Upgrade Project (HWUP) aims to enhance transmission capacity by upgrading 19.5 km of overhead lines from 275kV to 400kV and reconductoring 29 km between Pelham-Rye House and Waltham Cross. This project, part of the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment mechanism, addresses the need for network reinforcement to support future generation increases and improve energy security.

The Hackney Waltham Cross Upgrade Project (HWUP) by National Grid Electricity Transmission is designed to enhance transmission capacity under the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment mechanism. The project involves uprating 19.5 km of overhead lines from 275kV to 400kV and reconductoring a 29 km route between Pelham-Rye House and Waltham Cross.
It is initiated to reinforce the route between Pelham and Hackney substations in response to anticipated increases in future generation. The initiative aims to meet future demand, boost energy security, and promote national self-sufficiency.
