Navy Launches Phase II Groundwater Treatment Plant at Former NWIRP Bethpage
The Navy has inaugurated the Phase II Groundwater Treatment Plant in Bethpage, NY, investing $46 million to mitigate groundwater contamination. This facility is a key component of ongoing efforts to restore groundwater quality affected by historical industrial activities.

The Navy's new Phase II Groundwater Treatment Plant in Bethpage, NY, is now operational, following an investment of approximately $46 million. This plant is designed to extract and treat about 3 million gallons of contaminated groundwater daily, utilizing six recovery wells to manage a plume of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) primarily from past military manufacturing.
Initial system testing began in late 2025, with full operational capacity expected by mid-2026. Since the 1990s, the Navy has implemented various cleanup systems, with over 97% of the groundwater plume now under active control.
The Phase II facility complements existing systems and enhances plume control, ensuring ongoing protection of the aquifer. Future plans include a Phase III Groundwater Treatment Plant, projected to be operational by late 2028, further addressing contamination as it migrates. Continuous collaboration with state and local agencies remains essential for the success of these restoration efforts.
