Netherlands Invests Billions in Somaliland for Green Hydrogen Corridor to Rotterdam
The Netherlands is investing billions to develop a green hydrogen export hub in Somaliland, transforming Berbera into a key production site. This initiative aims to meet Europe's energy demands and enhance economic stability in Somaliland, shifting the region's focus from traditional industries to renewable energy.

In March 2026, the Netherlands announced a multi-billion dollar investment in Somaliland to establish a green hydrogen export hub. This project will utilize Somaliland's solar and wind resources to produce hydrogen at Berbera port, which is approximately 6,500 km from Rotterdam, projected to need over 5 million tons of liquid hydrogen annually by 2030.
The initiative aims to create thousands of jobs and reduce Somaliland's dependency on aid while providing Europe with a stable energy supply. The shift from fossil fuel dependency to renewable energy alliances could reshape energy dynamics, providing a sustainable alternative for heavy industries in Europe.
