Nevada's Geothermal Capacity Could Increase 30 Times with New Federal Legislation
A bipartisan Senate bill aims to enhance Nevada's geothermal energy output by tapping deeper underground resources. This could enable the state to generate up to 30 gigawatts of geothermal power, significantly contributing to the clean energy sector.

The proposed Next-Generation Geothermal Research and Development Act seeks to expand geothermal energy in Nevada, potentially increasing output to 30 gigawatts, from its current capacity of approximately 1 gigawatt. The legislation will promote research at the Department of Energy and establish a Next-Generation Geothermal Center of Excellence.
It will also create a Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy to test advanced technologies. Nevada currently hosts 28 operating geothermal plants and has nearly 400 megawatts in various stages of development. This bill aims to facilitate the exploration of hotter, deeper geothermal resources, which conventional methods cannot access, thereby enhancing energy supply and supporting rural economies.
