Harriet Gardens, a new homelessness village in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, has officially opened, featuring 15 modular homes and communal spaces at a cost of £3 million. Developed by Social Bite in collaboration with South Lanarkshire Council and the Salvation Army, the site aims to provide 24/7 support for residents to help them transition to independent living.
The facilities include an outdoor gym, cooking areas, and spaces for therapeutic support. This initiative responds to rising homelessness in the region, with the number of individuals classified as homeless increasing from 1,000 to approximately 1,500 since the COVID-19 pandemic. The project could serve as a model for addressing homelessness in other areas of Scotland.
