New Mexico Protects 60,000 Acres in White Sands Region through Conservation Agreement
A conservation agreement involving New Mexico State Land Office, DOD, and New Mexico Land Conservancy safeguards 60,000 acres. This agreement is significant for ecological preservation and military operations in the White Sands area.

An agreement has been established to protect 60,000 acres of state trust land in New Mexico's White Sands region for 75 years. This initiative involves the New Mexico State Land Office, the United States Department of Defense, and the New Mexico Land Conservancy, marking the second largest conservation effort in state history.
The agreement, which includes a $3.2 million benefit to public education, will prevent large-scale developments, ensuring the military's operational integrity at the nearby White Sands Missile Range. Current grazing leases will remain unaffected. Additionally, a related agreement in 2025 protected over 60,000 acres at Chupadera Mesa, yielding $2.8 million for public institutions.
