The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved NextDecade Corp. to construct two new LNG production units at the Rio Grande plant in Texas. This expansion could increase annual output from 17.6 million tons to 27 million tons. Legal challenges persist, with permits previously revoked and reinstated due to environmental concerns. The first three production units are expected to begin operations in 2027 and 2028. The project has support from local leaders despite opposition from environmental groups and the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe.

The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission authorized NextDecade Corp. to begin construction on the fourth and fifth production units at the Rio Grande LNG plant in Texas, potentially increasing output from 17.6 million tons to 27 million tons.
The company is already constructing three units, expected to operate by 2027 and 2028. Legal challenges remain, with a history of court rulings affecting permits. Local leaders support the project, emphasizing economic benefits, while environmental groups and the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe oppose it due to concerns about emissions and impacts on ancestral lands. Contracts for LNG supply have been signed with major companies.
