NLMK Indiana successfully modernized its 118-ton electric arc furnace (EAF), earning the Gold Reliability Achievement Award from the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST). The upgrade, executed in partnership with Primetals Technologies, was completed within a six-week shutdown, leading to a production increase of over 20 heats per day just four days post-restart.
Key enhancements include a single-point roof-lifting system and an integrated gantry, which improve worker safety and simplify maintenance. This modernization has decreased downtime and improved productivity, setting a benchmark for future projects. Insights will be presented at the AISTech Conference 2026 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
