NRDC Study: Wind and Solar More Cost-Effective Than Biomass for UK Coal Replacement

A study by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Vivid Economics indicates that wind and solar power will be more cost-effective than biomass for replacing coal power in the UK between 2020 and 2025. The report highlights the need for UK policymakers to reform bioenergy policies to avoid promoting expensive and environmentally harmful solutions.

It notes that biomass generates higher carbon emissions than wind and solar alternatives, making it a less viable option for achieving the UK’s clean energy goals. The study found that, when accounting for total economic costs, including technology and carbon costs, biomass is pricier than wind and solar.

By 2025, as costs for wind and solar continue to decline, they are projected to be the least expensive means of ensuring reliable electricity supply. As the UK plans to retire all coal plants by 2025, the report advocates for investments in cleaner renewable energy sources.
