Oakland City University Announces Mass Layoff Amid Patent Pursuit for Carbon Capture Technology
Oakland City University is facing a mass layoff affecting 167 employees, scheduled for June 1, 2026, while pursuing a patent for carbon capture technology. The university aims to address financial challenges through this patent, despite conflicting statements regarding layoffs.

Oakland City University will implement a mass layoff impacting 167 employees effective June 1, 2026, as detailed in a WARN notice sent to Indiana's Department of Workforce Development. The university is also pursuing a patent related to carbon capture technology, having received a letter of intent from an unnamed investor group for its purchase.
OCU holds two patents on carbon capture, developed by former professor Barnabas Otoo, designed to isolate carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels. Despite this, OCU officials are facing scrutiny over their contradictory statements regarding layoffs, as they initially denied such plans after the WARN notice was issued. The university's financial viability may hinge on the successful sale of the patent, which could mitigate ongoing financial challenges.
