Oaknoll Retirement Residence Achieves Record Waste Diversion Through Composting
Oaknoll Retirement Residence diverted 73,000 pounds of food waste in 2025 as part of its composting initiative, supported by a $10,000 grant. The program reflects a commitment to sustainability amidst rising operational costs, including a compost pickup service exceeding $500 monthly.

In 2025, Oaknoll Retirement Residence successfully diverted approximately 73,000 pounds of food waste, contributing to sustainability efforts in Iowa City. The initiative, supported by a nearly $10,000 grant from the City, facilitated the purchase of composting bins and liners, which are now being used independently as the grant period has ended.
Monthly compost pickup costs exceed $500, with only a $200 savings from reduced garbage pickup. Additional sustainability measures include native plant landscaping and energy-efficient building designs, such as geothermal energy and solar panels in newer facilities. There are plans to transition landscaping equipment from gas to electric, enhancing the community's environmental initiatives.
