Oceans North and Arup Study E-Methanol Production Potential for Vancouver Shipping

A report by Oceans North and Arup explores the feasibility of producing e-methanol as bunker fuel near the Port of Vancouver. It outlines a gradual development scenario over several decades, highlighting projected bunker demand, production timelines, and infrastructure needs.

The study suggests that e-methanol, produced using renewable electricity, green hydrogen, and captured CO2, could reduce emissions by 90-100% compared to heavy fuel oil (HSFO). However, it identifies significant challenges, including the requirement for substantial renewable energy and water, access to industrial land, and higher fuel costs.

The estimated levelized cost of production is $1,860 per metric tonne, with an anticipated construction cost for the production plant of approximately $731 million. The authors emphasize that this analysis aims to foster discussions on future fuel options rather than indicate immediate development plans, requiring long-term agreements and policy support for advancement.
